Art auction benefits local school

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Parents and students gathered at the H.O. Wheeler Elementary school Sunday for the annual silent Art Auction.

Dozens of donated paintings, jewelry and other items by local artists were auctioned off. This is the fifth year the auction has been held, but this year organizers added an arts-day-to-go with the fundraiser. Students participated in a variety of workshops including painting, acting and drumming.

"It provides an opportunity for kids to engage in arts activities, so it gets the scope away from just the school itself but further into the community. But it also supports community artists. These are arts organizations that either we work with or families in our school and other schools in Burlington bring their kids to," said Victor Prussack, the Burlington Magnet Schools Coordinator.

Organizers hope the event will raise $6,000 that will go towards art and healthy living programs at the school.
