HYDE PARK, Vt. -

A man was found stabbed to death early Monday morning inside his Hyde Park home. Police have a woman in custody. She's charged with murder.

Police say the killer was living with the victim. And that victim was part of a WCAX News investigation just over a year ago.

Police found Chris Cafferky's body in his home on Garfield Road in Hyde Park Monday morning after getting a 911 call just before 1 a.m.

"The caller, identified as Jeanette Maxfield, reported one person was deceased at the home. Responding officers arrived in scene and discovered a male deceased in the living room," Vt. State Police Maj. Glenn Hall said.

Police arrested Maxfield, who was living at the home. The 23-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder. Police say Cafferky was stabbed in the chest.

Neighbors say the news is devastating.

"That don't happen up here. I've never heard of anyone dying like that up here," neighbor Alice Ferland said.

Police blocked off the road as they began their investigation.

"I went down through yesterday and there was no path shoveled out and I just figured he was gone for a day, couple days or something," Ferland said.

It is still unclear what the motive may have been and whether Maxfield and Cafferky were romantically involved.

Channel 3's Jennifer Reading met Chris Cafferky last spring. The former inmate blew the whistle in a WCAX report on a corrections guard who came to him to buy steroids. Cafferky recorded the transaction on his cellphone, telling Jennifer he knew without video to prove it no one would believe his complaint about abuse of power.

At this point, police have not indicated any connection between his complaint about the guard and Cafferky's death.

Maxfield is in jail. As of now no bail has been set. She will be arraigned Tuesday in Lamoille County.
