Vt. lawmakers to explore legalizing pot

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The Legislature will begin exploring what legalizing pot could look like in Vermont.

Sen. Jeanette White first proposed the formation of a study last year.

The bill is set to be taken up in committee Wednesday and would look at potential legalization, regulation and taxation of marijuana in Vermont.

White says the study is a necessary first step before debating whether the drug should be legal.

"My feeling is that at some point marijuana will become a legal substance, whether it's by federal law or whether the states will just keep-- one-by-one-- chipping away at it. So my concern is that we need to look at what that would mean in Vermont," said White, D-Windham County.

A number of bills to legalize marijuana have been floated at the Statehouse but none are expected to gain traction this year. Just last year, the Legislature passed a law decriminalizing possession of small amounts of pot.
