Allegiant offers new direct flight from Burlington to Orlando

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A new way to take off from Burlington. Wednesday, Allegiant Air started offering a nonstop flight to Orlando, Fla.

Airport officials say there has not been a nonstop flight from Burlington to Orlando since JetBlue ended direct service in 2012, and this is the first time Allegiant has served Burlington. The flight can seat up to 166 passengers and will run twice a week.

For a week, Allegiant will be offering promotional one-way tickets to Florida as low as $89.

Vermont Tourism officials say outside of New England, the highest number of visitors fly in from Florida.

"When air service is improved in Burlington it's improved for the entire state and the region. So we have a really significant interest in this. More than 95 percent of the people who fly commercially out of this state fly out of this airport," Vt. Transportation Secretary Brian Searles said.

Officials say Orlando is currently the third most popular destination for Burlington travelers, after New York City and Washington, D.C.
