ADDISON, Vt. -

More than two dozen snowy owls are in Addison County. That's the conclusion of an Owl Blitz on Sunday.

More than 40 birders spent the day trying to find the big white birds who have invaded the United States this winter from the Arctic.

More than 123 observations of snowy owls were made by the volunteers after careful mapping researchers found there were at least 24 different snowy owls in the county.

Experts say the birds like the habitat in Addison County where there are large open areas-- perfect for hunting.

It's unclear why so many of the owls came to the United States this winter. But as the days get longer and warmer, it's expected the birds will return to the Arctic.
