Big gift for 2 Vermont bookstores

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Best-selling author James Patterson is giving $1 million to independent bookstores, including two in Vermont.

Phoenix Books and Norwich Books both received $5,000 from Patterson. The Vermont stores are two of 55 around the country to receive the author's personal money for this first round of grants.

Stores could apply for the grant by writing a letter to the author explaining why they wanted the money.

Both Phoenix Books and Norwich Books will use the money for children's programming.

"James Patterson is my hero," said Renee Reiner of Phoenix Books. "There is an internet monster that wants to control the whole world and there is someone like Jim Patterson who says no, what you're doing is important to this entire country. That's going to keep me awake for days," said Renee Reiner of Phoenix Books.

Patterson has handed out more than $260,000 in checks so far to independent bookstores. The other $750,000 will be given out in stages throughout the year.
