KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia -

A gold medal Friday for Mikaela Shiffrin of Burke Mountain Academy.

The 18-year-old won the Women's Slalom in Sochi. She grabbed the lead by a half second after the first run and hung on to win the entire race by 0.53 seconds. She was widely considered the favorite heading into that race.

And Shiffrin made Alpine skiing history as the youngest winner of an Olympic slalom gold.

Shiffrin graduated from Burke Mountain Academy last June. Students and coaches watched the race live online in the student center Friday. They shared video with us of the students reacting to Shiffrin's final run to a gold medal.

We talked to the gold medalist four years ago when it was her dream to reach the 2014 Olympics. Former WCAX Sports Reporter Seth Leavitt spoke to her. Click here for that story.

Also Friday, four local Olympians made up the U.S. team competing in the women's biathlon relay-- Susan Dunklee of Barton, Hannah Dreissigacker of Morrisville, Annalies Cook of Saranac Lake and Sarah Studebaker from Dartmouth College-- led the U.S. to a seventh place finish.
