BERKSHIRE, Vt. -

Jay Nichols, Superintendent of Berkshire Elementary, received a call Friday that one of his school's buses unexpectedly went off the road during its normal route of driving students home.

"I immediately left my office and drove quite fast to the scene, and I was the first administrator at the scene. Another employee was already there who's also a parent - Annie Lockerby - and she was already helping kids," says Nichols.

Vermont State Trooper David Pfindel was one of the first responders at the scene, and immediately questions the driver Shawn Parsell about what went wrong.

"She had looked down, and when she looked back up she was veering off the side of the road. She tried to correct causing the bus to flip on its side, and then it slowly came to rest back on its wheels," says Pfindel.

Police say around 15 kids were on the bus at the time of the accident, most of them between 7 and 9 years old.

"Kids were obviously pretty shook up, so I went on the bus to be with the kids while the first responders were taking kids to the hospital that needed to go. We had 7 that were brought by ambulance to the hospital," says Nichols.

According to police, one child from the crash was transported to Fletcher Allen in Burlington with a fractured neck. Nursing staff here say the child is in "good" condition.

"No lasting injuries, a little worried about the emotional part obviously. But we'll have counselors there to give them support when they come back to school," says Nichols.

State Police are currently investigating the crash. The bus driver took a preliminary breathalyzer test and scored point-zero-zero. Police say she will be ticketed with "failure to maintain lane."

"Our prays were answered. All the kids were safe and the community responded wonderfully," says Nichols.

An unfortunate accident, that police say could have been much worse.
