NY grants $9M for upstate broadband projects

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York officials say more than $9 million in grants has been approved for five projects extending broadband access to about 33,000 households and 4,500 businesses upstate.

The second round of grants to by Empire State Development is part of a Cuomo administration program to reach more than 500,000 residents with no high-speed Internet access, many in rural areas.

Larger grants are $5.26 million to Time Warner Cable Broadband in various counties and $2.22 million for North Country Public Emergency Network in several counties.

Others are $557,000 for Essex County Broadband Service Expansion, $558,940 for Otsego County Wireless Network and $500,000 for North Country Telecommunications Loan Fund.

The grants are awarded to internet service companies in partnership with local governments and economic development organizations.
