Vermont seniors help handle Hawks

Sandro Carissimo and Candon Rusin scored 17 points each to lead the Vermont Catamounts to a 72-47 victory over visiting Hartford in America East men's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium.

Vermont improves to 19-9 overall and 13-1 in league play. The Catamounts extend their win streak to eight games and have won 15 of their last 16 games. Hartford falls to 14-15 on the year and 8-6 in America East.

Rusin scored all 17 points in a 16-minute stretch during the second half after starting the game 0-for-6 from the floor. Luke Apfeld added 14 points, on 7-for-11 shooting, and grabbed eight rebounds. He is two points shy of becoming the third Catamount this season to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Clancy Rugg chipped in 10 points to round out the leading scorers for Vermont.

Taylor Dyson scored a team-high 13 points to pace the Hawks and Mark Nwakamma added 11 points and four rebounds for Hartford.

Vermont led 23-17 with 3:36 remaining in the first half, but the Hawks out scored the Catamounts 7-1 over the final three minutes and the teams headed into the break tied at 24.

Hartford took a 29-26 lead early in the second half, but Vermont used a 20-4 run to take a 46-33 lead with 11:45 left in the game. The Catamounts out scored the Hawks 46-14 during a 16-minute stretch of the second half to blow open the contest. UVM led 72-43 with 2:29 remaining and cruised to the ninth win at Patrick Gymnasium this season.

Vermont shot 64 percent from the field and went 4-for-5 from 3-point range in the second half and finished the game shooting 56.5 percent from the floor. The Catamounts held Hartford to six field goals and 24 percent shooting from the floor in the second half and 32.7 percent for the game.

The Catamounts host Stony Brook on Thursday (Feb. 27) at 7 p.m. in the final regular season home game for the Catamounts. The game will also determine the America East Regular Season Champion.

Prior to the game UVM will honor its senior class of Luke Apfeld, Sandro Carissimo, Josh Elbaum, Clancy Rugg, Candon Rusin and Brian Voelkel. The senior ceremony will be at approximately 6:30 p.m. Fans are also asked to wear gold to the game.
