Graniteville jeweler makes the most of local materials

GRANITEVILLE, Vt. -

Sixty-thousand people visit the Rock of Ages in Graniteville every year from mid May to October, but there's more than just the granite quarry drawing them in.

Meet Marcelle Moran. The 83-year-old has been a fixture in the visitors center for the past 51 years. The gift shop is filled with granite goods that come from all over the world, including from Marcelle's house in Barre.

Reporter Gina Bullard: Do you point out your products to the customer?

Marcelle Moran: You bet, you bet I do... They love it.

She makes granite jewelry for her business Moran Minerals.  "A lot of people like crocheting and knitting. I like making jewelry," Moran said.

She likes it so much she's been doing it for the past 45 years. With her nine children by her side helping, she was able to make thousands of pieces that used to sell like hot cakes. Sales have slowed down over the years, but she's still making products five days a week and working at the visitors center.

Almost all the granite from Moran's jewelry comes from Rock of Ages quarries. After it gets shipped to Germany to be cut and hand polished, Moran carefully and painstakingly picks out the perfect pieces to complete each of her designs. "Find a little stone that goes on here for a little bit of Vermont," she said.

Reporter Gina Bullard: But you don't wear jewelry?

Marcelle Moran: No, no... I just like making it and selling it to you people.

From rings and bracelets, to spoons and pins, pieces range from around $9 to $30 and can only be found in the Rock of Ages Visitor Center. "They're thrilled to death they can come up here and buy something that's made here -- which is not usual with gift shops," Moran said.

Pieces of the Green Mountains, put together with love to make jewelry that's Made in Vermont.
