Green Mountain Care Board chair blunt about taxes

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - When it comes to paying for a single-payer health care system in Vermont, the chairman of the Green Mountain Care Board is blunt - it's going to be a tax.

While the Legislature will be designing the new system and making decisions about how to finance it, the Green Mountain Care Board will decide if it is in the state's best interests. Al Gobeille, the board's chairman, told Vermont Public Radio that unlike others, he isn't running away from the money question. He says it's going to come from a tax, and the question is what is the best tax.

According to revised estimates presented to lawmakers this month, a single-payer system could cost the state $1.7 billion to $2.1 billion.
