Some want tax rate signal from Vt. lawmakers

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - It may be a chicken-and-egg question: Should Vermont lawmakers give a signal on school tax rates before Town Meeting Day? Or should lawmakers wait to see what local voters do with their school budgets?

Rep. Mary Morrissey, a Bennington Republican, says she's disturbed that the House does not plan to pass a proposed school tax rate before next week's Town Meeting day. She says in the past, that's been an important piece of information for lawmakers to take to local voters.

But Rep. Janet Ancel, the Democratic chairwoman of the Ways and Means Committee, says lawmakers need to know the broad shape of local school budget decisions before acting.

Tax Commissioner Mary Peterson in December said it looked like Vermont would need a 7-cent increase in statewide school taxes.
