CHITTENDEN, Vt. -- CVU and Woodstock held narrow leads atop both the boys and girls leaderboards after last Thursday's Freestyle events in the Vermont High School Nordic State Championships. The competition concluding Tuesday with the classic races at the Mountain Top Nordic Center in Chittenden.
The girls opened the day with a 5K classic race, and like last week Woodstock's Carmen Bango claimed the top spot in Division Two, besting her nearest challenger by just over a minute, and finishing third overall.
Thursday's freestyle winner, Autumn Eastman of CVU, claims second in this race, completing the course in just under 17 minutes.
Seven seconds back of the overall and Division One winner, Chloe Levins of Rutland, she was the runner up in last year's classic race, the champ today.
In the boys 5K classic four skiers finished within five seconds of each other for third overall. Craftsbury's Anders Hanson earning that third spot just ahead of Scott Mooney of Burr & Burton, Luke Keenan of Mount Anthony and Stowe's Sam Puddicombe.
In second overall, and the Division One champion, Issac Wright of Rutland, topping the next best D-1 finisher, Keenan, by 13 seconds.
Leading them all across the finish line, Zane Fields of Woodstock. His time, fifteen minutes, 21-seconds, a full 22 seconds better than Craftsbury's Hanson. Fields sweeping the two boys individual events at the state finals.
The championships capped by the 4 X 2.5K relays. In boys Division Two, Fields leading a Woodstock team that included Campbell Boswell, Graham Melville and Sam Linowski to the victory by just six seconds over U-32.
The race of the day coming in boys Division One. CVU edging Mount Anthony by just sixth tenths of a second for the victory that secures the team crown. The team of Casey Silk, Charlie Maitland, Cooper Wilsey and Thomas Clayton getting the job done.
In girls D-1, CVU tops Mount Mansfield by over a minute. Autumn Eastman, Cally and Tatum Braun and Rachel Slimovitch all part of that winning team.
And in Division Two, it was Woodstock on top again. The Wasps pacing their way past U-32 by over forty seconds. Carmen Bango, Lauren Kaija, Finn McFarland and Anna Ramsey making the the victorious quartet.
In the end, the results were a nordic state championship sweep for both the CVU and Woodstock boys and girls.
