ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. -

Layoffs at IBM were called off Wednesday, but a source tells WCAX News job cuts are now expected at the Essex Junction plant Thursday.

A reliable source says pink slips were planned for Wednesday, but at the last minute managers were told job cuts would not happen in Essex Junction.

Union organizers also believed Wednesday would be the day after getting ahold of an internal memo. The union says it believes the postponement was because the company's CEO was delivering a keynote address at an international conference.

Our source in the company tells WCAX News the cuts are now set for Thursday. There is no indication of how many people will lose their jobs. The state has not been notified.

"As you know, I'm very close to IBM. IBM is very important to Vermont and we have a great relationship with IBM," said Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont. "I'm not going to comment on any of the speculation that's out there in the press because I don't know anything that I haven't read in the press. What I do know is as a governor, my job is to create jobs. We have worked very closely with IBM and obviously we want to continue to have a great relationship going forward."

IBM cut 419 jobs in Vermont last summer as part of global cuts.
