MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The governor will appoint Samuel Hoar Jr. to Vermont Superior Court.

Hoar replaces retiring Judge Patricia Zimmerman.

Hoar is a lawyer with Dinse, Knapp & McAndrew and is a past president of the Vermont Bar Association and the Vermont Bar Foundation.

"I know Sam understands the challenges Vermonters face when they find themselves in front of a judge, and I am confident his talents will add to our proud judicial tradition in Vermont," Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont, said in a statement.

"I am thrilled and honored that Governor Shumlin has given me this opportunity to serve," said Hoar. "Participation in our legal system for Vermonters is often difficult and expensive, and we must be vigilant to protect access to justice for those who most need its protection. I look forward to working with members of the judiciary, lawyers, advocates, and my fellow Vermonters to ensure our court system keeps the promise of justice for all."
