CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A judge has refused to reduce bail conditions for a Concord, N.H., man accused of severely beating his girlfriend's 1-year-old daughter.
Twenty-five-year-old Scott Diberto was charged with assault and child endangerment Feb. 12. The Concord Monitor reports that a judge denied his attorney's request Thursday to lower his bail from $500,000 to $5,000 after prosecutors described the baby's injuries.
Deputy County Attorney Catherine Ruffle called it a case of extreme abuse that left the 14-month-old blind and incapable of purposeful movement.
In court documents, police say Diberto said the girl fell off a toy box or down the stairs, and later suggested an intruder had attacked her when he went out to buy cigarettes. His attorney did not address the charges at the bail hearing.
