GRANVILLE, N.Y. -

The search continued Friday for a Granville, N.Y., man who has been missing for 40 days.

Multiple agencies are conducting the search for Jonathan Schaff, 23, and used a power shovel to clear debris along the Mettawee River on the New York/Vermont State line Friday afternoon.

Schaff was last seen walking east in that area, along State Route 149, in the early morning hours of Jan. 18, after reportedly being involved in a physical altercation at Riverside Pub in Granville.

After search teams followed leads based on pings from his cellphone, other areas were ruled out and the search resumed Friday along Highway 149.

With the length of time Schaff has been missing, officials say they hope for a safe recovery, but are ready for whatever they may find.

"We certainly hope the best for his family. We would love nothing more than to be able to tell you that that is the conclusion to this case, but we are preparing ourselves for any eventuality," Vt. State Police Capt. J.P. Sinclair said.

Twenty-five members of multiple state and local agencies assisted with the search Friday before several were dispatched to the other search in Proctor.
