Should Vt. change the way it funds state colleges?

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

In 1980, half the funding for Vermont State Colleges came from the state. Now it's about 13 percent, and some legislators say it's time to act.

Progressive Sen. Anthony Pollina proposed forming a study committee in order to find ways to restore the 1980 funding level.

The measure passed the Senate last year but stalled in the House Education Committee.

This year the measure is moving again, and Friday Pollina had the opportunity to make his pitch for the importance of the study.

"What the bill says is that we recognize it's a problem and we're going to commit ourselves to making our colleges affordable and realizing it's going to be difficult, but putting it off is not going to make it any easier," said Pollina, P-Washington County.

The Legislature would have to come up with another $70 million to reach Pollina's 50 percent goal for the state colleges and about $250 million for UVM.
