Driver identified: Wrong-way driver crashes into tractor-trailer on I-89

WATERBURY, Vt. -

UPDATE: State Police say the driver of the car was 38-year-old Brian German of Warren, Vt. He was still in the ICU as of Sunday afternoon.

State police say Interstate 89 in Waterbury was shut down for hours overnight due to the accident.

State police say the car German was driving was going south in the northbound lane just before 3:30a.m. Saturday when it hit a tractor-trailer head-on. The tractor-trailer crossed the median and landed in the southbound lanes.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The tractor-trailer driver was not seriously hurt but was taken to the hospital. State Police say he was treated and released.

Police say at one point, both southbound lanes and one northbound lane were closed, snarling traffic.

The cause of that crash is under investigation.
