Parade of athletes in Stowe

Posted: Updated:

A first of its kind parade of athletes in Stowe Sunday. An event that highlighted outstanding young skiers from all over the country in a community that is well known for the sport.

Complete with fire trucks, American flags, and former Olympic athletes from Vermont, the 2014 Junior National Cross Country Skiing Championships in Stowe started with a bang.

"This whole thing is a pretty big deal and having it at Trapp Family Lodge will be really cool and probably attract a lot of attention," said Elliot Eastman who is supporting his sister who is skiing in the event.

Stefanie Woods traveled from Bozeman Montana to cheer on her daughter. One of about 400 skiers competing in the week-long event.

"It only builds confidence in them it is a great opportunity for them after working so hard during the season to have this culmination," Woods said.

This is the first time Stowe has hosted the event, which only takes place on the East Coast every four years.

And organizers say a parade down Main Street was the perfect way to start.

"We wanted to bring the community together the help welcome these athletes," said event organizer Brooke Mitchell.

And a way to support local businesses, giving them exposure in an outdoor recreation crowd, they would not otherwise receive.

"Getting everybody in Stowe to realize what a great community we are and we can work together as one community and get future events like this," Mitchell said.

Booths lined Main Street. Each offering their own taste on Vermont.

"Honestly not a lot a lot of people know about it and it is a super fun way to spend your winter and it is an awesome winter sport and this event is really big and it is really great to be out here with everybody," said Jenna Bourdeau of Snowmobile Vermont.

Tim Kelley is was here selling maple syrup though he seemed more interested in the skiers.

"It is awesome to have this high level racing here and this big of an event here right after the Olympics, having all the top nordic skiers come to Vermont it is really cool," Kelley said.

A cool event, for skiers and spectators from all over the country, that makes this community shine.

"Stowe is amazing and I think it is really classy as far as the whole setup and its pretty brilliant," Woods said.
