3 towns say 'no' to Vt. Gas pipeline idea

Posted: Updated:

CORNWALL, Vt. (AP) - Voters in the towns of Cornwall, Shoreham and Monkton are saying "no" to a plan by Vermont Gas to extend a natural gas pipeline through their communities.

In nonbinding Town Meeting Day votes Monday and Tuesday, voters from the three towns passed resolutions to oppose expansion of the pipeline.

The vote was 126-16 in Cornwall, 63-38 in Shoreham and by affirmative voice vote in Monkton.

The towns were voting on plans for a $70 million project that would pipe natural gas to Ticonderoga, N.Y., passing through Cornwall, Monkton and Shoreham.

Vermont Gas spokesman Steve Wark says the project would help business owners and residents cut their energy bills and reduce emissions.

The state has approved plans to extend the pipeline to Middlebury.
