POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -

A Peru, N.Y., man was killed in a motorcycle accident in Pompano Beach, Fla., Friday. And police say a drunk driver was to blame.

Police say an SUV turned left directly into the path of Benjamin Pirofsky, 30. The driver then took off. Pirofsky was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Nadia Verdoni, 42, was the driver who fled the scene. They say she was drinking and driving. Thomas Stanley told WFOR in Miami he saw what happened and took a picture of Verdoni's license plate after she promised to return to the scene. Verdoni was found trying to hide her car.

The crash came just one day before Pirofsky was set to move out of a relative's home and into his own place. Pirofsky is remembered by his family as an all-around good guy, always smiling, laughing and willing to give.

"He was the definition of the shirt-off-his-back kind of guy, would do anything for anybody or help anybody, never had anything bad to say about anybody," said Sam Pirofsky, his brother.

Verdoni faces charges including DUI-manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash with death resulting and tampering with evidence.
