The Division I Boys Basketball State Championship Game is all set for Saturday. Number three seed, Rice Memorial will meet number five seed Mt. Mansfield at 1pm at Patrick Gym. Both teams advanced with semifinal wins on Tuesday also at Patrick Gym. The Green Knights beat second seed Burlington, 44-35 while the Cougars knocked off top seed Burr and Burton, 60-56.
Burr and Burton faced Mt. Mansfield in the first game of the evening. The Cougars led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs used a 17-3 run to help get within 2 in the final 30 seconds. MMU's Nick Bergeron hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Sean Springer led the Cougars with 20 points, including five 3-pointers. Joey Shehadi led the Bulldogs with 20 points as the team suffers its first loss of the season.
Kendrick Gray scored a game high 19 points in Rice's victory over Burlington. The Green Knights defense held the Seahorses to just 9 points in the first half. Josh Hale led Burlington with 11 points. Rice will now get a chance to defend its Division I State Title won last year 48-40 over St. Johnsbury. The Toppers, the fourth seed this season, were eliminated by Mt. Mansfield in the quarterfinal round.
