Posted: Updated:

Essex and Middlebury captured high school girls hockey state championships Wednesday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The top seed Hornets beat second seed BFA St. Albans, 3-2 in overtime in the Division one title game. The Number one seed Tigers beat third seed Burr and Burton, 2-1 in the Division two title game.

The Comets scored the first two goals of the game. Taylor Jackson and Danielle Schreiner had the tallies. In the third period, the Hornets Kathleen Young takes over scoring two goals 12 minutes apart, sending the game into overtime tied 2-2. 1:45 into OT, Young finds Melanie Theriault at the Comets blue line. Her wrist shot finds the back of the net for the game winner. It's the Hornets second D-I state title in three years.

Middlebury got both of its goals from Sara Boe. She scored 5:24 into the first period giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Ryder Ferrone answered for the Bulldogs in the second period with a power play goal. Boe's second goal and the game winner came 6:35 into the third period. Tigers goalie Baily Ryan preserved the win, making 24 saves. It's Middlebuery's first ever girls hockey state title.
