Dalai Lama gives Senate opening prayer

WASHINGTON -

The Dalai Lama opened Thursday's session of the U.S. Senate with the daily invocation. He was introduced by Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, the Senate's president pro tem.

"The Senate will be in order. The opening prayer will be offered by his holiness, the Dalai Lama," said Leahy, D-Vermont.

"Speak or act with a pure mind and happiness will follow you," the Dalai Lama told senators.

Leahy is a longtime supporter of Tibet's quest for sovereignty from China. The Dalai Lama is the former leader of the Tibetan government in exile.
