CVU, Stowe earn boys hockey state titles

Thursday, March 7th

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- CVU and Stowe earned boys hockey state titles Thursday night at UVM's Gutterson Fieldhouse.

In the Division One final, #1 CVU jumped out to a 3-0 win after two periods and went on to beat second seed Essex 4-2.

Thomas Samuelson scored in the first period. Drew Pitcher and Kaleb Godbaut adding goals in the second to build that lead.

Essex found some life early in the third when Jacob Gaboriault found the net just thirty seconds into the period to cut the CVU lead to 3-1. But Elliott Mitchell answered five minutes later for the Redhawks to put the game out of reach.

Jonathan Palmer closed out the scoring for Essex. For CVU, which lost in last year's state final, it's the program's second D-1 championship in four years.

In the Division Two title game earlier in the evening, #2 Stowe downed top seed Middlebury 2-1. It's the Raiders first state title since 1999.
