Connect the mind body and soul through workshops

Posted: Updated:

The Burlington Yoga Conference began Saturday at UVM's Davis Center. The event gives participants a chance to connect the mind body and soul through workshops they may not have access to on a daily basis.

The Burlington Yoga Conference began 6 years ago and has become a staple in the community.

Event organizer Ben Lanza said, "We saw real, real isolated groups of communities. What we wanted to do was sort of bring all those communities together, to share yoga together."

The weekend long event brings out about 200 participants every year and offers nearly 30 workshops designed to give participants a chance to explore new forms of yoga.

"You get to experience different teachers, maybe see if you want to try out different studios, if you've never been to a studio you can find out where you may want to go so it's a lot of fun," commented yoga participant Malory Goldstein.

Another participant, Jim Donovan said, "You learn a lot, there's a lot of the shared practices that you wouldn't quite thought of it that way and sometimes it's just refreshing things that you did know."

Saturday, classes began at 9 am and continued throughout the day.

"Within each workshop time slot there's four different offerings. Classes, everything from traditional yoga postures, to meditation to mindfulness to higher beta," said Lanza.

One of the classes offered, known as Bhakti, focuses on the heart as the center.

Yoga instructor Coral Brown said, "Bhakti is one of the pathways to Samadhi or enlightenment, or what we're all reaching for which you could describe as a sense of wholeness."

Lanza adds, "Everyday we're practicing yoga, whether we realize we're giving energy to that or not, I feel like everyday life is yoga."

"For me, as a mental health professional and also a yoga teacher, its a reward every time I get to teach and see this transmission have such an effect on people, its a beautiful art to explore," Brown said.

Day passes to the event start at 99 dollars, you can register for a single class for 27 dollars.
