A solar project is taking off at the Burlington Airport. It comes thanks to a partnership with the Burlington Electric Department. The airport will be installing $1.5 million worth of solar equipment on top of its parking garage. The top deck is currently empty and Burlington Electric will be leasing the space for $20,000 a year. The solar gear will not directly power the airport but will pump energy back into the grid.
"It's something that we needed, we wanted -- to make our footprint, to make the airport and community greener. So they basically stepped up and ran with the project, and they came back with a proposal that makes a lot of sense to us," said Gene Richards of the Burlington International Airport.
Airport officials hope the installation will begin as soon as possible.
