Plattsburgh officials working to unite city and town

Posted: Updated:

The leaders of the City of Plattsburgh and the town of Plattsburgh are putting their heads together to create a better Plattsburgh as a whole.

"Very excited -- Town of Plattsburgh, City of Plattsburgh -- are coming together with our governing bodies as well as our department heads to talk," said Bernie Bassett, Supervisor for the Town of Plattsburgh.

Bassett and Plattsburgh City Mayor James Calnon want to build a relationship between city and town and share each other's services. Both say there was communication between the municipalities in the past, but nothing as structured as this new collaboration will be. "We could have a waterline break. There's a particular clamp needed, we don't have that one... just that in the field my water department is comfortable to call somebody in the city and say, 'Do you have this we need it now to solve this problem,'" Bassett said.

This collaboration will benefit the city and town by saving each money, manpower and use of equipment. It will also benefit the residents of the City and Town of Plattsburgh. "Provide better services with current taxes or similar services with better taxes, both are wins for the residents. And so, those are our goals. Let's be as efficient as we can be, and we know working together makes us more efficient," Calnon said.

Bassett and Calnon will hear from city and town departments about what current needs are and distribute and share services accordingly. "Share more than just the name Plattsburgh, we share the region of Plattsburgh. And we really needed to find a way to make that real and this is one step in that process," Calnon said.

A discussion between the municipalities will be held Friday, March 14 to kick off the new team Plattsburgh. Senator Betty Little and Assemblywoman Janet Dupree will be in attendance.
