Recycling the Vermont State Hospital

Posted: Updated:

An unprecedented recycling effort is underway in Waterbury.

Demolition of the Vermont State Hospital started last fall and is about 90 percent complete. State officials say all that debris is being put to good use.

The state is hoping to get LEED certification for recycling upward of 90 percent of the materials. A lot will be crushed and used for the new AHS building. Some historic bricks and slate will be salvaged.

And Waterbury has already received about 20 truckloads for sidewalk and paving projects.
