Vermont service organization says fuel demand high

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The head of a Vermont community service organization says as another powerful storm hits the region, he's hearing from more and more people desperate to fill empty fuel tanks to keep warm.

Hal Cohen of the Central Vermont Community Action Council tells The Barre-Montpelier Times Argus families seeking fuel assistance usually see some relief by March, but this year, cold temperatures have kept demand high. After the storm, weather forecasters also say a cold front will hit the region through Thursday and Friday.

According to Cohen, the need for fuel leads people to scrimp on buying food, so they tend to lean more on food pantries.

Organizations like Just Basics and Vermont Foodbank say they prepared ahead of Wednesdays' storm to make sure food was available for needy Vermonters.
