Travel troubles as big storm bears down on region

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT -

The late-winter blast is socking in our region. The snow is piling up already, and the storm is going to be hanging around for a while. Nearly 300 schools shut down Wednesday, many companies closed early and travel is tricky.

Vermont knows how to handle snow, but flying is still tough. There are a lot of cancellations and delays, so make sure to check in with your airline if you have a flight Wednesday or Thursday. Some airlines have been canceling flights in advance.

"I'm really proud to be here with some of the Agency of transportation folks who are going to be out there clearing our roads. We've got the best road clearers, best Agency of Transportation in the country," said Gov. Peter Shumlin.

He even got on the radio at the Vermont Agency of Transportation's garage in Middlesex to speak directly with VTrans crews out on the roadways.

"I can't tell you how grateful I am for the work you are about to do. I know you're not going to get much sleep tonight, I know Vermonters are proud of you. So I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart... and go get 'em, we're going to be behind you all the way," said Shumlin.

While crews will be working to clear roads, some Vermonter's say this type of March snowstorm doesn't faze them.

"Uhhh it's different how? We live in Vermont," said Richard Parker, a Richmond resident.

Others said they could do without it.

But whether you embrace the snow or not, it's here. There have been some major problems on the roads, like a tractor-trailer that slammed into a home on Route 3 in Proctor. Police say the truck was going around a corner when the driver lost control due to slippery conditions. There was someone in the home, but there are no reported injuries.

Experts say accidents can be avoided if travelers take it slow and steady.

As Shumlin puts it, "Let's use that good old Vermont sense."

From what we saw today while we were out traveling, people were using that common sense. The saving grace here is the lack of ice on the roads, but accumulation is happening fast so be careful Wednesday and Thursday and definitely check in on those flights because the board keeps changing.
