Burlington businesses affected by winter storm

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The racks are full, but the store is pretty empty at Sweet Lady Jane on Burlington's Church Street Marketplace.

Driving snow and whipping winds are not ideal shopping conditions which is why this store, along with many others, is shutting down early.

"Mainly we're concerned about keeping staff safe and keeping people off the roads," said Jess Friedman from Sweet Lady Jane.

Sweet Lady Jane says closing early is a rarity and happens maybe once or twice a year. Doors get locked at 5 p.m., normally it's open until 7 p.m.

The clothing store says unpredictable winter weather on weekends this year has made the entire shopping season one to forget.

"It's been tough," said Friedman.

Members at the Sports and Fitness Edge had to get their workouts in early Wednesday.

"We do our best to stay open the majority of the time, we rarely close the clubs," said Janet Woodruff from the Edge.

The health club has five locations in Chittenden County, all closed early at 5 p.m., five hours ahead of time.

"We get a lot of foot traffic, people coming in after work. We try to accommodate everyone but if safety is a concern we have to make proper decisions for that," said Woodruff.

The Sports and Fitness Edge has only closed early one other time this year.

Back at the store, the storm may have put a freeze on sales Wednesday, but spirits are still high and they expect the registers to be ringing again soon.

"A storm in the middle of the week is great because on the weekends tons of tourists come up, people checking out the mountains they're psyched on it," said Friedman.

For snowboard and skiing lovers at Burton, Jake Burton closed the Burlington office Wednesday so employees could take advantage of the snow on the slopes.

If you're stuck because of the storm, the Courtyard Burlington is offering discounts Wednesday and Thursday. Many businesses including those on Church Street expect to open late Thursday. The Sports and Fitness Edge won't open until 9 a.m. The good news is you'll still be able to get your workouts in by shoveling all this snow!
