Fire destroys NH car dealership, repair shop

LANCASTER, N.H. -

Employees at Lancaster Auto looked on in disbelief Wednesday, after a fire destroyed their place of business. Just a shell of the structure remains.

Firefighters were first toned out to the Route 3 building a little before 7 a.m.

"First units arrived on scene and found heavy fire in the front part of the building, immediately requested mutual aide assistance from multiple surrounding communities," Lancaster Assistant Fire Chief Steven Jones said.

Along with firefighters, officials from New Hampshire's Department of Environmental Services were also called to the scene.

The building housed a showroom for used cars, as well as a garage for maintenance and repairs. Firefighters say several vehicles were inside when the fire broke out, and despite their efforts, little appears to be salvageable.

"We had a lot of fire volume, but we were able to knock it down relatively quickly," Jones said.

Dalton Motor Sports, which is located right next store to the building, escaped unscathed, as did the renters who live on the top floor of Lancaster Auto.

"Three apartments upstairs, two of which were occupied. Both residents got out safely," Jones said.

Firefighters are still trying to determine what caused the fire and the fire marshal's office has been called in to investigate, which officials say is standard procedure for a fire this size.

The owner of the building declined to speak on camera but did tell us that the building is insured.
