Putney rejects cell tower

Posted: Updated:

PUTNEY, Vt. (AP) - A planning commission in the Vermont community of Putney has rejected plans by AT&T to build a 130-foot cellular tower.

The plan had not been popular among people who lived near the proposed location.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports the planning commission voted against the proposal Tuesday after a third public hearing on the tower. The commission said the tower would have been too high to meet local zoning regulations.

AT&T has said the tower would be needed to improve wireless and cell service around Putney and Interstate 91. An attorney for AT&T said the tower had to stick out above the tree canopy to provide coverage. She said AT&T will still petition the Public Service Board, without the town's approval.
