Fire forces evacuations at South Burlington supermarket

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Grocery shoppers were evacuated from the Hannaford supermarket on Dorset Street in South Burlington Friday morning.

Firefighters tell us an employee noticed a heating unit on the roof had caught fire. The store sounded the fire alarm and evacuated the store, while the maintenance supervisor put the fire out with an extinguisher.

South Burlington Fire Chief Doug Brent said everything was handled well.

"He did exactly what the plan calls for. He noted that there was a fire. He turned in the alarm right away. And then he grabbed a fire extinguisher and went back and tried to put the fire out, which it seems like he did. Or at least knocked it down until we could finalize things," Brent said.

No one was hurt.

The store reopened about a half an hour later, with minor damage to the roof.
