South Burlington Police investigate suspicious death

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

UPDATE:  Police have identified the woman as 71-year-old Dorothy Marbach. The investigation is continuing.

----Previous Story---

Police are investigating a suspicious death at 105 Catkin Drive in South Burlington.

The state police crime lab seems out of place in this quiet South Burlington neighborhood off Dorset Street. Police were called to the home at 105 Catkin Drive for a welfare check Friday morning. They say they found a person dead inside.

"Until we can prove otherwise, we're going to treat it as a crime, not because there's any specific indication of that, but until we're absolutely positive there's not, we're going to proceed with the utmost caution, so in case something does evolve, we're prepared to deal with it," said South Burlington Police Chief Trevor Whipple.

Police are not yet saying who died or how, but neighbors say the home belongs to an older woman whom they haven't seen in months.

"Very private, kept to herself most of the time you know. Saw her through the summer but most of the time in the winter she was pretty much kept inside, didn't see much of her," said neighbor Randy Hanlon.

Hanlon says she mostly stayed inside during the winter, so it wasn't unusual for them to not see her, but when he was checking on the house after the storm and saw a disconnect notice for her phone on her door, got concerned and called police.

Hanlon: We figured she was away with family or something through the holidays and that she was going to come back when the warmer weather got here.

Reporter Cat Viglienzoni: And so when was the last time anyone saw her?

Hanlon: The last time we saw her was back in the early part of December.

Right now police are treating the death as a suspicious incident until they rule out foul play. Neighbors tell us they're surprised because they don't usually see police activity like this here.

"Very quiet, no problems, no burglaries, nothing. We almost never see police in here," said Lee Allaban who lives on Catkin Drive.

Police say the investigation will continue and they don't expect to release the person's identity or the cause of death until next week.
