LOWELL, Mass. - Adam Chapie scored a power play goal with 1:17 left in regulation for the game-winner, sending No. 8 UMass Lowell to a 3-2 victory over No. 15 Vermont on Friday night in Game 1 of the Hockey East Quarterfinals at Tsongas Center. The Catamounts fall to 19-13-3 (10-10-0 HEA) on the season, while the River Hawks improve to 22-9-4 (11-6-3 HEA).
Rookie forward Brady Shaw scored both UVM goals on the night for his first career multi-goal game. Brody Hoffman stopped 30 shots in the loss for the Catamounts, who were 4-for-4 on the penalty kill prior to the late game-winner.
Vermont and UMass Lowell face off at Tsongas Center in Game 2 of their quarterfinal series on Saturday (Mar. 15) at 7 p.m.
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Were it not for the near-perfect play of Dartmouth's sophomore goaltender Charles Grant, Friday night's opening game of the ECAC Hockey Championship Quarterfinals could've had a much different result.
Grant finished with 39 saves, one off his career high, but top-seeded Union (25-6-4) defeated the 10th-seeded Big Green (10-19-4), 3-0, in Game 1 at a sold-out Messa Rink to take a one-games-to-none lead in the series.
Union got goals from Michael Pontarelli in the second period and two from Daniel Carr in the third. Carr scored on a penalty shot and an empty net in the final minutes to seal the victory.
These same two teams will play Game 2 of the series Saturday night. Puck drop is once again set for 7 p.m.
