Police: Opiate addiction led to armed robbery

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSON, Vt. -

Police say an opiate addiction fueled a Johnson man to rob a convenience store at knifepoint.

They say at 11 p.m. Saturday, a man walked into the Maplefields in Johnson and demanded money, threatening the clerk with a knife. He then ran off with cash. The employee was not hurt.

Police say after watching surveillance video, the store manager told them the robber was a frequent customer, Joseph Meyers. They arrested the 31-year-old at his home, and say Meyers told them he robbed the store to support his opiate addiction.

He'll be in court Monday to face armed robbery charges.
