NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - A 36-year-old Vermont man who caused a neighborhood in Newport to be evacuated after allegedly standing on his garage roof with a rifle is facing new charges for breaking into his estranged wife's home and threatening her boyfriend.
Derick Niles of Newport told police in September he was being surrounded by hundreds of non-existent police officers and retreated to his garage roof with a rifle, where he held a number of state and federal law officers at bay for four hours. No shots were fired.
The Caledonia Record reports that Niles pleaded not guilty Monday to a variety of new charges stemming from the March 13 incident. He is being held on $2,500 bail.
Niles' lawyer says that Niles' family is disappointed by the bail.
