Warren offers advice, tips on handling potholes

Posted: Updated:

WARREN, Vt. (AP) - One Vermont town is offering residents some facts about potholes and tips about how to handle them.

Vermont Public Radio reports the town of Warren has posted a "pothole alert" on its website asking residents to "please don't begin to lecture our road crew on the need for better road maintenance."

The town says potholes are nothing more than the abrupt change in ambient road temperatures - a freeze-thaw-freeze cycle - coupled with the sun's rays.

The town says permanent repairs require waiting until the spring thaw.

It advises drivers if they're safe, don't swerve to avoid potholes, because that could cause the front wheel and tire to impact the edge of a pothole, possibly doing more damage than hitting it squarely. And avoid heavy braking.
