UVM professor mistakenly shares student GPAs

Posted: Updated:

Technology trouble for a top teacher: An email error at the University of Vermont disclosed some students GPAs and violated a federal act.

The self-populating email was mistakenly sent by UVM Professor Jane Kolodinsky. It was supposed to go to staff. It listed 53 students' names and grade-point averages, violating the act known as FERPA. All of the students were eligible for honors, so they had GPAs above 3.0. No other personal information was shared.

The school immediately apologized and the information was removed. UVM is working on a fix to prevent it from happening again.
