WASHINGTON, D.C. -

He's spent less than six months on the Vermont Supreme Court, but now Justice Geoffrey Crawford is up for another job.

Senator Leahy is recommending to President Obama that Crawford be the next judge for the U.S. District of Vermont.

Crawford was one of seven people considered for the job by a judicial nominating committee. Crawford joined the Vermont Supreme Court in October. Prior to that he spent 12 years as a superior court judge.  On the federal bench he would replace Judge William Sessions, who is going into semi-retirement. Senator Leahy announced the recommendation on the Senate floor.

"Attorneys on either side who have appeared before him, have found him to be an engaged and careful jurist who treats everyone in the courtroom with respect," Leahy said.

If President Obama accepts the recommendation, he will formally nominate Crawford for confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
