City of Montpelier plans for a new multi-modal transit center

Posted: Updated:

Plans are heating up for a new multi-modal transit center in the capital city, but what it will look like is still anyone's guess.

The $8 million project would be located on the East side of Taylor Street in an area currently being used as parking for state workers. On Wednesday, the city council is set to weigh in on which developer to hire, Redstone or D.E.W Construction. A city design committee recommended Redstone, which has floated several possible uses for commercial space above the center including a hotel, but officials at the nearby Capital Plaza hotel and even the Mayor aren't happy about that option.

"I have some questions about whether that's the best use of this site, but fortunately we do not have to decide that now. Our first step will be to choose a developer, then we'll be working, having a public process within the community to decide what the most appropriate use of this space is," said Montpelier Mayor John Hollar.

The city hopes to break ground on the project sometime this fall.
