BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermont has a new Superior Court judge.

Burlington attorney Samuel Hoar Jr. was sworn in during a ceremony in Burlington Wednesday. Hoar replaces retired Judge Patricia Zimmerman on the bench. Vermont Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Reiber, Vt. House Speaker Shap Smith and Gov. Peter Shumlin praised Hoar Wednesday for his keen judicial mind and his commitment to the people of Vermont.

"He has such a deep compassion for the people of this state, for justice and for determining right from wrong," said Shumlin, D-Vermont.

"I am truly excited and energized by this challenge. I hope that all my brothers and sisters in the bar will join me in it. I look forward to working with you all to ensure we have a profession and a system that lives up to the promise of justice for all," said Hoar.

Hoar has served as president of both the Vermont Bar Association and the Vermont Bar Foundation. He is widely recognized as a champion of justice for under-served Vermonters.
