WINOOSKI, Vt. -

In the early morning hours Thursday, police agencies from across the region pulled the trigger on what they say was a monthslong investigation.

"We picked this time of day because most people are inside, there's less traffic and it's safer for everybody," Winooski Police Sgt. Michael Cram.

At 4 a.m., neighbors heard the unusual and alarming sounds of helicopter blades over a home at 43 LaFountain Street.

"Using their forward-looking infrared they were able to spot movement inside the building, so if anyone would've run they would've been instrumental in tracking them down," Cram explained.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement helicopter was focused on the second floor of the apartment house; police say it's a known hot spot for heroin.

The raid netted three arrests. Deirdre Hey, 47, of Winooski, was taken into custody for selling heroin. The other two had outstanding warrants. Joel Griffith, 39, was cuffed for an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault. Heather Casey, 38, was wanted for retail theft.

Along with drug paraphernalia, police say they found what they believe is stolen property. They say they will continue to investigate.

In addition to the ICE helicopter, Winooski police were assisted by Colchester, South Burlington and Burlington police.
