Vt. to attend national forum on criminal justice

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont is attending a forum hosted by the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance on strategies to improve the success rates for people released from prison.

U.S. Department of Justice representatives will attend in addition to Vermont and 12 other states that were awarded planning grants to reduce recidivism in 2013.

Organizers hope the Thursday forum encourages peer learning among the states as they develop their statewide plans.

Vermont Department of Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito says the planning grant has been "a tremendous opportunity" for state leaders to meet Gov. Peter Shumlin's goals of reduced recidivism and improved public safety.

The states are eligible to compete for an implementation grant of up to $3 million to help them achieve their goals.
