Plattsburgh considers pedestrian mall

Posted: Updated:
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

Joshua Kretser, a member of the Plattsburgh Common Council, has an idea to develop downtown Plattsburgh. He says the Church Street Marketplace is good for Burlington and he'd like something similar for Plattsburgh, where people can shop or go out to eat.

"Engage some business owners downtown, some community leaders, and also some North Country residents to see if maybe a downtown street closure-- making a destination for pedestrian foot traffic-- would be something the downtown could benefit from," Kretser said.

The idea of having a shopping district in downtown Plattsburgh is nothing new. Many residents would like to have more activity in the area. And some feel it would attract visitors and boost the economy.

"I feel like Aleka's could be that spot if we had like a Church Street-type street that people walk by and are like oh man we gotta eat there," said Tyler Puchrik of Aleka's.

While Plattsburgh having its very own version of Burlington's Church Street may seem like a good idea for business, some business owners here on Margaret Street say now is not the time.

"I think we've got to let Plattsburgh, downtown Plattsburgh, evolve naturally. We're getting busier all the time thank goodness; we're the last stop north. But we don't have a mall in the middle of Margaret Street," said Patty Waldron of Koffee Kat.

Waldron is worried what impact cars not being able to drive down the street will have on businesses around the downtown. Waldron is also concerned about Plattsburgh becoming too much like Burlington and losing its identity.

"I'm not saying that I want this to be Plattsburgh turning into Burlington or the downtown turning into Church Street, but that's why I'd like to have input from community members and community leaders to what they might think would be a good idea," Kretser said.

Kretser says he has ideas of some streets that could benefit from a street closure, but will wait to hear what the community has to say.

The Plattsburgh Common Council is meeting Thursday night to discuss the idea of a downtown street closure.
