Vt. House passes $1.44 billion general fund budget

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont House has given final approval to a $1.44 billion general fund budget for the next fiscal year and passed it on to the Senate.

The House passed the budget on Friday after spending much of the day debating amendments related to health care.

Minority Republicans and at least one Democrat pressed unsuccessfully for a renewed demand on Gov. Peter Shumlin that his administration produce a financing plan soon for Green Mountain Care, the universal, state-backed health care system he wants to launch in 2017.

Shumlin is saying that that plan isn't ready yet, but he expects it will be by next January.
